Not simply because they were funny, but because they related to a particular tone that everyone had towards their daily lives. Friends was for the feel-good crowd while Seinfeld was for the sarcastic- regardless, we all had a Joey, Ross, Rachel, George, and sometimes, even a Kramer in our lives.
What about the Indians? Where was the show like that for them?
Everyone's likely heard the occasional roast from their parents, the judgmental vibe a family friend gave when they did something remotely "controversial", and faced the stresses it means to be an Indian-American growing up today. In fact, we have a meme group dedicated to this shared experience - Subtle Curry Traits - The Facebook Group.
So when a family friend asked us, "Why don't you make an Indian sitcom?", the question was baffling.
So baffling that it hit- we had to make this show. We had to take this shared experience we have, and show the most honest portrayal of it, one where no one had a filter.
The Office meets an Indian-American household. The satire our community needs. For the demand that definitely exists.
